It is with great sadness and deep shock that I announce to you that our beloved Shepherd, Bishop Mario Dorsonville, passed away at 6:50 pm this evening after he gave in to complications arising from recent health problems.

On Sunday, December 10th Bishop Dorsonville celebrated Mass for the Diocesan Leadership Awards.

The Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana is thrilled to announce the tremendous success of its eighth annual iGiveCatholic campaign. This year’s campaign raised over one million dollars in support of the schools, church parishes, and ministries of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.

The board of Catholic Charities and leadership of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux are pleased to announce the hiring of Benjamin Duet, Ed.D., MBA, as executive director of Catholic Charities.

Second Harvest Food Bank, in partnership with the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, held a groundbreaking ceremony on August 29, 2023 for their new Bayou Region Warehouse in Houma, significantly increasing the organization's capacity to serve individuals and families facing hunger in the Bayou region.

To facilitate diocesan Hurricane Ida rebuilding efforts, the diocese has received State Bond Commission funds totaling up to $95 million.

Mindful of the pastoral needs of God's people and the limited availability of priest-personnel, having made the necessary consultation, and only with the good of all in mind, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Mario E. Dorsonville has made the following provisions:

The Diocesan Office of Worship exists to assist the Bishop in his role as the chief liturgist as he establishes norms and directives for common worship in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. The office fulfills this role primarily by facilitating diocesan liturgies and coordinating the liturgical planning between the diocese and individual parishes, particularly with regard to Confirmation and the Bishop’s pastoral visitations. It is also the responsibility of the Diocesan Office of Worship to form and delegate ministers such as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors who wish to serve in their respective parishes. The office also serves as a resource for clergy and parishes by communicating information as given by the Magisterium and the Local Ordinary.

Thirty-six cardinals, archbishops and bishops, as well as one abbot and over 100 additional priests attended the installation of Bishop Mario Dorsonville as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux during the Installation Mass Wednesday, March 29 at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales in Houma.

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville, STL, D.Min., currently an auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.

With over 2,300 donations from 1,938 donors to 59 organizations, a total of $1,769,744 was raised for our local community during the 24-hour online giving event held on #GivingTuesday (November 29, 2022).

The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is joining dioceses across the country for the eighth annual #iGiveCatholic campaign, held annually on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and generosity.

While Catholic Charities is sensitive to the fact that church parishes within our diocese are in various stages of recovery from Hurricane Ida, we also know that it is our Christian duty to help relieve the suffering of others when we are able to do so. In that vein, we are organizing collection efforts for material goods and financial assistance to be sent to the most impacted areas in and around the Diocese of Venice, FL.

Diocesan Administrator Rev. P.J. Madden and The Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana have announced the date of the Catholic Foundation’s St. Joseph’s Dinner, Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Nicholls State University’s Cotillion Ballroom in Thibodaux.

Several years ago retired diocesan priest Fr. Willie Todd partnered with the Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana to establish an endowment to provide funding for church parishes and Catholic schools for new projects and ministries.

Since Hurricane Ian made landfall on September 28th, leaving behind havoc and pain for our neighboring states, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is providing relief to those who have been directly impacted.

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Houma-Thibodaux seminarians Joseph Lapeyrouse and Matthew Prosperie were ordained into the transitional diaconate.

The 2021 Annual Report on the Implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, produced by the Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection (SCYP) in 2021, describes the progress of Catholic dioceses/eparchies in implementing victim assistance and child protection policies and programs in the United States, particularly those found within the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Fr. Simon Peter Engurait, Vicar for Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux and Pastor of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Schriever, and Karen David, Catholic Charities Board Chair and Interim Chief Administrative Officer of Catholic Charities, have been named finalists for Catholic Extension's highest honor, the Lumen Christi Award.
