It is a joy to recognize God’s call for you and your spouse to walk through life together, growing in love and drawing closer to Him. Your marriage is a gift not only to one another, but to the whole Church and the world.
The Church desires for your marriage to flourish and is here to support you throughout your life together. Through prayer, preparation and the grace of the sacrament, you can build a strong, Christ-centered marriage rooted in love, faith and a commitment to one another.
Every couple comes to marriage preparation with a unique story and set of circumstances. The Church wants to walk with each couple with care, compassion and honesty, helping them discern their readiness for the lifelong commitment of marriage.
Certain circumstances may require additional pastoral conversation, consultation or diocesan review. These may include:
Marriage involving a minor
When either person is under 18, additional steps are required to ensure the couple understands the commitment of marriage and is prepared to enter into it freely and responsibly. Parents or guardians will be consulted, and a diocesan evaluation may be required.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy does not, by itself, determine whether or when a couple should marry. Couples are encouraged to take the time needed to prayerfully discern their readiness for marriage apart from the pregnancy. Additional diocesan consultation may be required in some circumstances, particularly when the decision to marry was made after the pregnancy.
Different faith backgrounds
When a Catholic marries someone of another Christian tradition or faith, the Church offers additional support to help the couple talk through their differences and make thoughtful plans for prayer, worship, the practice of their faith and the religious upbringing of their children.
A previous marriage
Those who have been married before may have additional steps to complete before they are free to marry in the Catholic Church. A priest or deacon will help each couple understand their circumstances and guide them through the appropriate process. Click here to learn more about annulments.
Seeking to have a marriage recognized by the Church
Couples who are already married but whose marriage was not celebrated according to the requirements of the Catholic Church may need to complete a marriage preparation process before their marriage can be recognized by the Church. The priest or deacon working with the couple will explain the process and any steps that apply to their situation.
Living together before marriage
Couples who are living together are invited to approach marriage preparation with openness and honesty. The Church offers pastoral guidance to help couples understand the sacrament of Matrimony, the meaning of Christian marriage and the call to live their relationship in a way that honors God.
No two couples are exactly alike. When special circumstances arise, your priest or deacon will help you understand what is needed and connect you with additional diocesan resources when appropriate.
Marriage preparation is not meant to be a series of obstacles. It is an opportunity to slow down, ask important questions, pray together and prepare for the vocation of marriage with honesty and hope.
The marriage preparation period is normally at least six months. In some circumstances, additional time or diocesan consultation may be needed.
